Firearm Safety Rules

The rules we live by — from the IDS course materials. These are non-negotiable at every IDS class and on every range we use.

Last updated: July 2026

The rules we live by

  1. Treat all firearms as if always loaded — and know the condition of your firearm.
  2. Keep your finger off the trigger until you have identified the target and decided to shoot.
  3. Never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to kill or destroy.
  4. Be aware of your target and beyond — what is in front, behind, and to the sides of it.

On the range with us

  • Eye and ear protection required whenever the range is hot.
  • Obey all commands immediately (“cease fire” = stop).
  • Keep firearms holstered or benched with actions open until directed otherwise.
  • No handling behind the line or when anyone is downrange.
  • No alcohol or impairing substances.
  • Children and guests only where posted and supervised.
  • When in doubt, ask.

Range-specific rules at Double Tapp (or the range designated by your instructor) take precedence where stricter. IDS reserves the right to remove anyone for unsafe conduct without refund.
